Isabelle’s Law is a proposed piece of legislation designed to make policing fairer, safer, and more accountable. It is named in reference to Isabelle Vine, to honour her legacy by protecting others and ensuring integrity within the police service.

Why We Need Isabelle’s Law

  • Too often, police personnel accused of serious misconduct are able to resign before investigations conclude.

  • Misconduct findings are not always transparent to the public.

  • Whistleblowers within the police fear speaking out.

  • The public’s trust in policing is damaged when accountability is weak.

Isabelle’s Law seeks to close these gaps and restore confidence in those who serve our communities.

What the Law Will Do

  • Independent Oversight: Establish a National Police Misconduct Body and a public misconduct register.

  • Transparency for the Public: Give the public the right to know if officers or staff dealing with them have previous proven misconduct.

  • Whistleblower Protection: Allow serving police personnel to report misconduct directly to the independent body, safely and confidentially.

  • No Resignation Loophole: Stop officers or staff resigning while under investigation for misconduct or gross misconduct.

  • Fair Suspensions: Provide clear, fair options for suspension during investigations.

  • Stronger Consequences: Ensure dismissal for gross misconduct, including loss of pension and severance benefits.

The Vision

Isabelle’s Law is not anti-police — it is pro-accountability.

It protects the public, supports honest police personnel, and ensures no one is above the law. By introducing these reforms, we can rebuild trust and ensure integrity is at the heart of policing.
